CHARITE: A premier medical research institute in the heart of Germany

The Charite serves as the most prestigious institute of Germany. In 2003, as a result of the merger of the Charite with the "Universitatsklinikum Benjamin Franklin" of the Freie Universitat, the "Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin" becomes a [member corporation] of both universities and, thus, it is one of the largest clinics and medical research centre in Europe. Charite is consortium between the Freie University Berlin and the Humboldt University.

More than half of the German Nobel Prize winners in medicine and physiology come from the Charite, among them Emil von Behring, Robert Koch and Paul Ehrlich.

The Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin is focusing on raising the profile of the six areas of their primary research activities. In six selected areas, the Charite is striving for a top position in the national and international research rankings, the focus areas include

* Immunological sciences
* Cardiovascular research and metabolism
* Neurosciences
* Oncology
* Regenerative Therapies
* Rare diseases and genetics

Application process at Charite is via different modalities:

1. A Direct contact with the Professor of group via email showing your enthusiasm in the research work which is being carried out in his/her research group. Please be specific in your question as an email without personalization is mostly treated as spam.

2. Applying for project specific scholarships for project of your interest which includes third party funding. This needs a preplanning and structure for a project. Once this is finalized with the Professor the funding can be applied for.

3. Funding via International cooperation programs where the co-operation in science and technology already exists between the two countries viz. DAAD, Alexander von Humboldt foundation to name a few.

4. Charite also has various schools where regular PhD positions are announced for International students, one needs to visit the research centre website to get updates or one can also sign up for auto-updates.
