Freie University Berlin is a full-spectrum university, comprising twelve departments and three Central Institutes (John F.Kennedy Institute for North American Studies, Institute for East European Studies, Institute for Latin American Studies) that together offer more than 150 different academic programs in a broad range of disciplines. It is internationally known for its research in the humanities and social sciences, as well as in the field of natural and life sciences.

As an International Network University, Freie University maintains 105 partnerships at the university-wide level, along with 339 university partnerships within the Erasmus academic exchange network and 45 institute partnerships, which provides critical impetus for the university's interdisciplinary and collaborative research activities. Each year, about 600 international scholars and scientists contribute to the variety of teaching and research activities pursued at Freie University.


Masters in High-Throughput Genetics To Study Regulation of Direct Cell Fate Reprogramming through Erasmus Mundus EUPHRATES

Project. EUPHRATES is a project selected in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus programme, aiming at fostering cooperation in the field of Higher Education between European and Indian Institutions through a mobility scheme addressing student and staff exchanges. The project covers a unilateral mobility from India to Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Slovenia).

Description of the Program: For treatment of degenerative diseases by replacement therapies specific tissues need to be generated. Such tissues can be derived from direct cell type conversion in vivo bypassing the induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell state. The Direct Reprogramming (DR) strategy utilizes transcription factors (e.g. MyoD) that can induce specific cell fates such as muscles. However, the DR approach can convert only a few other cell types successfully, while most cell types are refractory to induced DR. Students will elucidate mechanisms that inhibit DR using C. elegans as a model organism. To identify DR-regulating mechanisms this project will make use of whole genome RNAi screens. Each of the 20.000 genes of C. elegans will be depleted one-by-one and assessed for facilitating DR. Additionally, 4D-time-lapse microscopy will be used to visualize DR events in vivo.

Candidates have to apply online through the EUPHRATES online application form (available in the webpage http://www.usc.es/euphrates ), uploading the required supporting documents.Applicants should first check whether they are eligible to apply for a EUPHRATES grant. EUPHRATES includes 5 types of mobility according to the academic level of the candidates: Undergraduate, Master, Doctorate (PhD), Post-doctorate and Academic/Administrative staff. Mobility durations will vary depending on the academic level. For applying for Masters, candidates must have obtained a Bachelor degree or an equivalent diploma that corresponds to the program you are applying for. EUPHRAT ES does not involve all fields of study. Please, make sure you belong to any of these fields of study, otherwise, your application will be excluded. EUPHRATES includes the following fields of study: Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences. All candidates may apply for a maximum of three host universities. Sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction of the host universities they apply to is mandatory. Only official certificates will be accepted as proof of knowledge.Admission to programs taught in English does not require proof of German skills. Grants cannot be awarded to those candidates who have lived and carried out their main activities (studies, work etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in a European country.
