National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER)

The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is a research institution in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. The Prime Minister of India laid the foundation stone on August 28, 2006, establishing the institute along the lines of the IISc in Bangalore, and its five sister institutions, the IISERs that are being established at Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Bhopal and Thiruvanthapuram in India.

Unlike the IISERs, which will be governed by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, NISER operates under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). T he government of India has earmarked an initial outlay of INR823.19 crore (US$130 million) during the first seven years of this project, starting from September 2007. Students are admitted to this prestigious institute by means of this screening test held in 50+ centers throughout India. It's done in collaboration with UM-DAE CBS, Mumbai.

All admitted students receive a scholarship of INR5000 (US$79) per month which should be sufficient to meet the course fees and boarding costs. Students also receive a contingency grant of INR20000 (US$310) per year to facilitate their academic pursuits. In 2010 January, NISER started offering a Doctoral Programme under the guidance of faculty members of NISER to students with a Master degree in basic sciences, e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. To get admission, students have to qualify the CSIRNET/GATE/ NBHM or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant area of research. NISER has four schools. They are:

School of Biological Sciences
School of Chemical Sciences
School of Mathematical Sciences
School of Physical Sciences

During the construction phase of the permanent campus, the institution is functioning under the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar (IOPB). The Odisha government has provided 300 acres (1.2 km2) free of cost for the upcoming campus, in Barunei Hills, between Bhubaneswar, the state capital and Khurda. This location is a few km southwest of Bhubaneswar. The institute is located at Jatni (Khurda road) town.

The campus will contain academic as well as residential areas. The academic township will have a total building area of 56,500 m2 consisting classrooms, faculty offices, a computer centre, a central library, administrative offices, a cafeteria, a workshop complex, an auditorium, and teaching and research laboratories. The sports complex, which would include aquatic facilities and a playground, would occupy 20,000 m2.

Residential buildings, including hostels, apartments, faculty and staff housing of different categories, a guest house, a medical center (with 20 beds), a community center with shopping arcade, a gym, children's school etc., would occupy an area of 1,02,000 m2.

The entire NISER township is stipulated to be completed within 36 months. A separate 3-acre (12,000 m2) campus near the Bhubaneswar city center is also being established.

INTEGRATED MSc
NISER offers a 5-year integrated M.Sc. Programme in basic sciences after 10+2 years of schooling (or equivalent). At present the institute has four major schools, namely Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. After successful completion of the academic requirements students are awarded a Master of Science degree in one of the four subjects: biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics. The programme has a balanced semester-based course structure with a flexible seamless curricula which
emphasize interdisciplinary nature of science in the 21st century and promote exploration, innovation and research. Normally, selected students will be accepted in the school of their choice, s ubject to availability of s eats . At the end of the first year, a student will have an opportunity to change to another school, subject to availability of a seat in that s chool. The curriculum for the first two semesters (first year) is common to all students and specialization begins from the third semester. The core courses in the subject of specialization provide strong foundations in both theoretical and experimental aspects of the discipline. Even after specialization in second year, students are required to go through a certain number of courses in other desciplines. All students are required to go through a small number of compulsory courses in humanities, technical communication, history of science, environmental and energy sciences.
The fourth year of the integrated M.Sc. Programme is devoted to advanced courses in various sub-disciplines. In the fifth year every student will undertake a guided research project. The outcome of the investigation will be reported in the form of a thesis. Throughout the five-year programme, students will be encouraged to take up summer projects and visit reputed national laboratories and universities. Eminent scientists from India and abroad will be regularly invited to give colloquia/seminars and interact with the students. In short the curricula are designed to ensure depth in the area of specialization together with breadth of exposure and intellectual enrichment and to prepare the students for high level professional research and development career in national laboratories, universities and industry.
The academic session for fresh students generally begins on August 1 of the year.

INTEGRATED Msc-Phd
NISER will admit students for Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme in various schools through appropriate entrance tests. Candidates with B.Sc. and B.Tech. degrees, can join this programme if they pass through the selection procedure. B.Sc. students will be required to take 12 courses and carry out an M.Sc. level project before he/she joins the Ph.D. research stream. All Ph.D. Scholars will be required to qualifying written and oral comprehensive tests and candidacy examinations before submitting the thesis. The thesis will be examined by external reviewers. It has to be publicly defended and the candidate will be declared successful before award of the Ph.D. Degree. Ph.d
Students with Master degree in basic sciences, e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics will be admitted for Doctoral Programme under the guidance of faculty members of NISER.
The students will be required to take 6 courses (or more depending on counseling). They will also be required to take qualifying written and oral comprehensive tests and candidacy examinations before submitting the thesis. The thesis will be examined by external reviewers. It has to be publicly defended and then candidate will be declared successful before award of the Ph.D. Degree. National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is a compulsory test for students seeking admission to National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar
